June #TTSFieldTrips

Don’t you just love this time of year? Summer is around the corner and you’re still excited for the warm weather and hopeful that you have lots of leisure time ahead of you. By mid-July we’re all sick of the heat and just want to stay home and watch Netflix. But before that summer laze gets to you, pencil in some time for fun in June. There’s so much happening and a lot of it is FREEEEEE!

1. COAST, Santa Monica: Sunday, June 5 (FREE)

Santa Monica’s first open street event.  Two miles of car-free streets and
local food, music, shops, culture, dance and games with family and friends. Great excuse to try the new Expo Line extension to Santa Monica.

2.  Noah Hawley discusses novel “Before the Fall” w/ Bob Odenkirk: Monday, June 6

I’m not going to lie, this made the list because Bob Odenkirk (“Better Call Saul,”                     “Breaking Bad”) will be there and I’m a big fan. Noah Hawley is no slouch, though.               He is an Emmy and Golden Globe Award-winning  TV show creator with a new                         thrilling novel.  A reading/ signing at Skylight is always a good time.

3. Make Music Pasadena, Pasadena: Saturday, June 11 (FREE)

This all-day all-ages annual musical event features 30 unique craft vendors and 150               musical performances across 5 main stages. The musical lineup will feature an                         eclectic mix of diverse music, including seasoned performers and emerging                               homegrown talent.

Weekly and held at El Pueblo de Los Angeles in DTLA will feature over 100 top taco vendors curated by the World’s First Tacorazzo, Bill Esparza. Plus live mariachi music and cocktails!

6. Mongorama at LACMA: Saturday, June 18 (FREE)

Part of LACMA’S Latin Sounds series featuring world-renowned artists from Cuba, Brazil, Argentina, Peru, Mexico, and L.A. Mongorama explores the early Mongo Santamaria charanga-jazz material of the 1950s and early 1960s. I don’t know what that means but I’m willing to find out.

7. Smorgasburg: Sunday, June 19

Smorgasburg is launching a market for food, design, vintage, and events every Sunday starting June 19, on the five-acre site of the weekday Alameda Produce Market . Cultural events, pop-ups, and other surprise experiences will also be part of the market mix.

8. L.A. Beer Week, Wake and Bake: Tuesday, June 21

With events happening all week beginning  Saturday, June 18 you’ll be hard pressed to find something that doesn’t sound awesome, but Wake and Bake tops the list. Breakfast is what’s for dinner as Chef Wes prepares a unique breakfast for dinner menu to go along with a very special collaborative taplist from two favorite breweries Almanac and Smog City. Example: Bacon Fat Cinnamon Toast Ice Cream Sandwich Pancakes- Bacon Bits, Bacon Fat Icing, Vanilla Ice Cream, Cinnamon Swirls, Cinnamon Toast Crunch. I’ll see you there.

9. Silver Lake Picture Show: Thursday, June 23 (FREE)

Join SLPS , a summer community event that screens popular and culturally significant feature films and introduces them with short films made by local filmmakers, for the 35th Anniversary screening of ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’. Theses events also feature live performances from local bands. Score!

10. Paddle the L.A. River: Saturday, June 25

Paddle the LA River is the premier kayaking experience in LA. Guides tour you down one of the most natural soft-bottom areas surrounded by native habitat along the L.A. River in the Sepulveda Basin. You’ll will get a chance to view wildlife, navigate a kayak around slow-moving water, and learn about the river’s past, present, and future. . . in . . . the . . . L.A. . . . River!!
